Check pixels before ppi
The first useful numbers are the pixel dimensions. A file that measures 6000 by 4000 pixels contains the same number of pixels whether its metadata says 72 ppi, 240 ppi, or 300 ppi. Changing that ppi label without resampling does not add detail. It changes the proposed relationship between those pixels and a physical print size.
On a screen, the browser mainly cares about the actual pixel dimensions. It does not quietly improve an image because the file says 300 ppi. In print, the pixel count gets divided across inches. A 6000 pixel wide file can print 20 inches wide at 300 pixels per inch, or 30 inches wide at 200 pixels per inch. The first version packs the same information more tightly.
Ppi and dpi also describe different things. Ppi describes image pixels per printed inch. Dpi describes the printer's physical dots. Resolution for websites and open calls
A web file should be large enough for the way the site displays it and light enough to load without making the portfolio feel heavy. For many artist sites, a JPEG around 2000 to 3000 pixels on the long edge gives a useful balance for full width display and moderate zoom. The right number still depends on the site, the crop, and whether visitors can open a larger view.
The ppi label is not the deciding factor online. Pixel dimensions, compression, color space, and file size are. An sRGB JPEG is the practical default for most web uses because browsers and common platforms expect it. Keep the master somewhere else. A website export should be a delivery copy, not the last surviving version of the artwork.

This structure also keeps future decisions open. A larger master may support a catalog page that nobody planned during the original shoot. A web copy cannot grow back into that master later. Keep the versions easy to recognize. A simple structure such as Master, Web, Print, and Submissions is enough. Add the artwork title or inventory number to every filename.
